Morocco, Business, 9/12/2000
Maroc-Telecom company has posted sales of 5.42 billion DH ($ 542 million) up to last June 30, marking a growth of 32% compared to the corresponding period of 1999, said the company's Chief Executive Officer, Abdeslam Ahizoune.
Ahizoune who held on Monday a press conference to present the company's results in the first half of 2000 said Maroc-Telecom which will shortly be listed on the stock exchange has posted net profits of 1.26 billion DH ($ 100 million), compared to 855 in Jan-June 1999.
Ahizoune ascribed the positive financial performances to the increase in the number of phone subscribers who reached 2,673,937 subscribers up to last June 30, against 1,589,864 up to June 99. The number of phone subscribers up to August 31, 2000 reached 3,012,389. He added that this is mainly duly to the thriving mobile phone market. Presently, there are 1.6 million subscribers to Maroc-Telecom's mobile phone network which covers 94% of the Moroccan territory. The state phone company holds the monopoly over land phone lines and is sharing the mobile phone market with an international consortium which bought the second license for over one billion US dollars.
Regarding international coverage of mobile phone, the company's CEO said Roaming agreements were signed with 133 telecom operators in 72 countries.
He also predicted that users of Maroc Telecom mobile phone lines are expected to exceed 2 million subscribers by end 2000.
Regarding Internet, Ahizoune said the number of surfers using Maroc-Telecom network reached, up to last June 30, 10,341 users of the commuted phone network and 385 users of specialized lines. He added that presently the company services 16,000 surfers through direct line and 450 by leased lines.
