Khartoum: Washington not qualified for mediation between government and opposition
Sudan, Politics, 9/12/2000

In the time in which news were repeated about a U.S initiative for establishing peace in Sudan, Khartoum's government assured that Washington is not qualified for the mediation between the government and the opposition.

The Sudanese Anbaa newspaper said yesterday that the U.S initiative was presented under the title "uncommitting document" and it states on convening a meeting between the two sides in Washington at the end of the current month.

The newspaper quoted the document stating that the settlement will ratify a principle declaration that was suggested by I.G.A.D. The principle declaration states on ratifying the right of self-determination for the Sudanese side and the separation of religion and state.

The newspaper referred to the participation of five neighboring countries for Sudan, which are Uganda, Ethiopia, Eriteria, Kenya and Egypt.

The Sudanese government assured its refusal to any initiative by Washington as official sources in the Sudanese government said that Washington's aggressive works do not qualify it to play the mediation role between the government and the opposition forces for creating a national rapport.

In a statement yesterday, the Sudanese government clarified that the government did not stop discussions with the U.S administration.

The statement also emphasized on the important that the discussions must by based on respecting choices and the recognition of rights.
