Egypt - Djibouti historic strategic ties

Djibouti President Ismail Omar Guilleh extended thanks to Egypt and President Hosni Mubarak over backing his efforts and initiative to achieve reconciliation and stability in Somalia.

Guilleh said the peace, security and stability prevailed in Djibouti after the peace agreement between the government and opposition in 1994.

As to economic reform, Guilleh said Djibouti signed an agreement with International Monetary Fund (IMF) in early 2000 on the second phase of economic reform.

Djibouti enforced a strict austerity measures to cut down the spending as the salaries of state's civil servants were trimmed by 40 per cent, he said, voicing hope the economic conditions would improve soon.

Urging Egypt and Arab world to have investments in his country, he said Djibouti enjoys a unique location. As regard to Egypt Djibouti relationship, he described the ties as historic, strategic and well-grounded.

Egypt was, and is always siding with Djibouti, he said noting that no goings-on could spoil the relations between the two countries.

As to Somali crisis, he said Somali national reconciliation meeting in Cairo held in 1997 with the participation of all Somali factions, proved to be the best conference.

Egypt championed Djibouti initiative on reconciliation in Somalia, he said, noting that he visited Egypt to brief President Hosni Mubarak on the mechanisms related to Djibouti initiative.

Majority of Somali people back peace and Arta Conference, he said, noting that the neighboring countries supported the initiative on reconciliation in Somalia. Moreover, Guilleh described Djibouti-Eritrea ties as well-founded.

As to Sudanese problem, he said Djibouti backed Egypt-Libya initiative on reconciliation in Sudan, noting that there is no contradiction between the two initiatives launched by Egypt and Libya and Inter-Governmental Authority for Development (IGAD). IGAD countries are exerting arduous efforts to settle Sudanese crisis.

As to the peace process, he called for supporting the Palestinian stance in the peace negotiations.
