Conference highlights dialogue as essential for success of reforms in Africa

A conference on "promotion of social dialogue in Africa," which wound up here Wednesday, concluded that social dialogue is an essential factor for the success of economic and social reforms in Africa.

Participants in the encounter held by the African section of the International confederation on Free Trade Unions deplored in a declaration the absence of dialogue in some African countries, while in other countries it is unfruitful and in others it is not recognized as a normal process in organizing professional relations.

The conference recommended to African governments to set up independent and representative social and economic councils to give an opportunity to the civil society to express its viewpoint and concerns on the country's policy.

The declaration also said it is up to governments to fight unfair competition, guarantee law enforcement and abstain from interfering in internal affairs of trade unions.

On their part, trade unions should be securing that changes do not compromise full-time work and social justice, participants recommended calling the unions to endeavor with employers and governments for sound labor relations.

Over 65 participants representing African trade unions, and regional and international organizations took part in the meeting held Sept.4-6 with the collaboration of the Moroccan Labor Union (UMT).
