Mubarak: Economy is doing fine
Egypt, Politics, 9/7/2000
In an interview with Al Gomhuria Newspaper, Egypt's President Hosni Mubarak said "The Egyptian economy is doing fine and the liquidity problem will be over," said Mubarak. He pointed out that the reason for the problem is the increase in production and drop in exports.
Mubarak said that he had assigned Prime Minister Atef Ebeid to implement the back-to-school fair with the aim of providing high-quality goods at reasonable prices for Egyptian families.
He described the event as providing a chance for factory owners and merchants to cut down prices of goods and upgrade quality, as customers can never be forced to buy poor items,.
He underlined that debtors should pay back loans they got. "Bank performance is getting better and it is important to demand guarantees for loans," Mubarak said.
He said that the government protects money of depositors and at the same time, gives businessmen the chance to contribute to the development of Egypt.
Mubarak pointed out that he always urges businessmen to contribute to social work and set up service and charitable projects to create more jobs for the youth and open up new markets for Egyptian products.
As for the coming elections, Mubarak said that he will review the final list of candidates of the ruling National Democratic Party (NDP) on Sunday. "The citizen is the one who is to bring his representative to the parliament so he should think twice before selection," Mubarak said.
Mubarak maintained that all parties and candidates are equal as being all Egyptians, adding that he welcomes constructive opposition and respects people's choice.
Asked about the possibilities of post-election change, Mubarak said that change could take place at any time and according to specific criteria and the requirements of each stage of national action.
