Presidential and parliamentary elections in Sudan
Sudan, Politics, 9/7/2000
Sudan's foreign minister Mustafa Othman Ismael said that the presidential and parliamentary elections in his country will be held in the mid of October as scheduled before.
In statements he made in Cairo on Wednesday, the Sudanese minister added that Sudan refuses any US proposals that does not take into their account, the Egyptian- Libyan initiative. He ruled out the success of the US proposals which have not yet developed into an initiative, if any of the two countries ( in remarks to Libya and Egypt) are alienated.
Ismael stressed that the only outlet and the overall solution for the Sudanese problem comes from the Egyptian- Libyan initiative. He added that there is a tripartite meeting to be held by the end of the current month in Tripoli, including the foreign ministers of Egypt, Sudan and Libya to discuss executive steps for the comprehensive dialogue forum.
He said that in its address before the Millennium summit, his country will call for canceling the debts of the poor countries, to improve overall conditions in the African continent to withstand poverty, ignorance and diseases and to contribute to development projects. He stressed the importance of an international backing for this continent.
