The Arabs and the Millennium summit

The representative for the Arab League AL at the UN Hussein Hasounah has stated that the Arab group taking part in the Millennium summit due to start today in New York will reiterate the Arab position which is based on establishing just and comprehensive peace in the region and will also debated the Arab perspective for a UN role in the coming stage.
In a statement to Sawt al-Arab radio Hasounah added that the Arab representatives to this summit had made fundamental changes on the statement to be released by this summit, especially the right of people to fighting occupation and foremost being the right of the Palestinian people to self- determination and the establishment of their own independent state on its national soil.
Hasounah added that the Arab group is making intensive contacts with other groups taking part in the summit in order to draw decisions taken by the Arab states council in its recent session held in Beirut, especially on Jerusalem.
He said that the Millennium summit will deal with several key issues including the role of the UN in the new century and the importance of clinging to international legitimacy and achieving peace and stability in the world, democracy and equality and ending the adverse impact of globalization.
