The National party to join the NPF in Syria
Syria-Lebanon, Politics, 9/6/2000
A Syrian official source in Damascus said that the role played by the Syrian socialist national party will be increasing effectively in the future. A matter which is considered an indication to the possibility of the said party's joining of the National progressive Front NPF.
In a statement released by the Party on Tuesday it said that Vice President Muhammad Zuheir Masharaqa stressed on Monday during his meeting with the chairman of the political branch of the party Issam Maheyri the " effectiveness of the role played by the Syrian social nationalists on the political arena in Bilad al-Shaam" noting that this very role will be increased in the future.
However, observers see in this meeting as an indication for the possibility of the national party to join the National progressive Front NPF in Syria which constitutes the ruling coalition in Syria and includes seven parties, under the leadership of the Baath Party.
To this effect, the representative of the National socialist party at the Syrian People's Assembly (PA) said " the country's priority is to develop the work of the NPF before expanding it, at least for the time being."
The statement said that Masharqa " praised the solid militant relations between the Baath Party and the Syrian socialist national party on the Syria and Arab levels " especially as stances advocated by the Syrian national socialists in Bilad al-Shaam stem from their belief and confidence in the pivotal role played by Damascus in leading the conflict with Israel.
The statements added that the participants in the meeting reviewed " conditions of the Syrian Social nationalist party and the Baath party in the Lebanese elections in light of the results of these elections."
Talks also dealt with "the role played by the Syrian 'nationalists' in confronting Israel and their solid backing to the Syrian position."
Earlier, the Syrian national Social party asked to join the Syrian NPF but its requested was not positively responded because of its "violation to the Baath party ideology which refuses to include in its ranks parties built on religious, ethnic or regional basis."
Syria views the Syrian Socialist national party as " a Lebanese party which is not licensed in Syria." It was banned since it was accused of assassinating the chairman of the third branch Col. Adnan al-Malki in April, 1955.
The Syrian national Social party is represented at the Syrian parliament by Basil Dahdouh, who is carrying out media activities and circulate statements. His posters are seen in several Syrian provinces.
