Security in Yemen
Yemen, Local, 9/6/2000
The Yemeni police in Sanaa on Tuesday defused a land mine placed in front of a tax office. Should this mine went off it would cause great human and material losses.
The Yemeni Sabaa news agency quoted a security source at the Yemeni ministry of the Interior that the security forces on Monday evening received a warning that two persons had placed two mines in that site, adding that it succeeded one of the two mines and is still searching for the second.
On the other hand, the special criminal court in Yemen has approved imprisonment sentences for 15 years against three Yemenis who were convicted of kidnapping foreigners.
The Yemeni news agency Sabaa said that the sentences released against the three Yemenis which were convicted of kidnapping several foreigners, drinking of alcohol and 80 lashes ( according to the Islamic Sharia because they committed adultery).
The Yemeni government has intensified penalties in order to limit operations of kidnapping foreigners. These operations are often carried out by outlaw armed tribes, and thereby affecting the sectors of tourism and investment.
