UN Millennium Summit affirm for international cooperation
Egypt, Politics, 9/5/2000
Egypt's Foreign Minister Amr Moussa left Cairo Monday for New York to participate in the UN Millennium Summit, due to start Wednesday, September 6.
Moussa is to deliver Egypt's address on behalf of President Hosni Mubarak at the United Nations Millennium Summit in New York to a gathering of over 180 leaders and heads of state.
He will delineate the priorities of Egypt's foreign policy pertaining to the UN role, Middle East peace and the elimination of weapons of mass destruction from the region and the world towards the establishment of a stable world order.
He will affirm the need for regional and international cooperation on the issue of UN reform and its Security Council, promoting the UN's potentials in peacekeeping, reviewing the sanctions system and the elimination of poverty.
"There are certain serious events that are taking place in a number of countries, including those in the Great Lakes, Former Yugoslavia and elsewhere, which need an international intervention," according to Moussa.
There is still a wide gap between the Palestinians and Israelis, but it is possible to make a breakthrough, Moussa said when asked on the efforts being exerted on the Palestinian-Israeli peace track.
Everything hinges on the ongoing contacts to place matters in their right course, Moussa said, reiterating that any settlement should be based on the international legitimacy.
UN Secretary General Kofi Annan will present to the Summit an "extremely significant" report on the new world order and the future role of the international organizations, Moussa said.
"Egypt is highly interested in developing the UN and maintaining its central status," he added.
"The new world order would not be stable except when enough attention is given to the poor in the South as well as issues of socio-economic nature," he added, calling for adopting a balanced stand to the future.
