Syria-Qatar, Politics, 9/5/2000
Syrian President Bashar al-Assad on Monday received a message from the ruler of Qatar Sheikh Hamad Bin Khaleifa al-Thani inviting him to attend the Islamic Summit conference due to be held in Doha in November.
The message was handed over to President al-Assad by Qatar's minister of energy, industry, the electricity and waters Abdullah Bin Hamad al-Ateyah who met with President Bashar during his visit to Damascus.
SANA said that al-Assad's talks with Ateyah dealt with means of developing cooperation relations between Qatar and Syria.
The Qatari minister arrived in Damascus on Sunday in a visit which will last for several days during which he will hold talks with the Syrian officials on means of developing relations between the two states in light with what was agreed upon during the visit of the ruler of Qatar to Syria in August.
Meantime, the Syrian prime minister Muhammad Mustafa Miro discussed with al-Ateyah means of strengthening economic relations in the areas of tourism investment, oil and gas industry and petrochemicals as well as developing the appropriate atmosphere to protect investment, prevent double taxation and exchanging exports.
However, in the first reaction by the state- run banks to the idea of licensing private banks in Syria, the director general of the Syrian commercial Bank Mahmoud Mithqal said that the state run banks will lose most of its trained and qualified cadres for the private banks.
Mithqal explained: " the Syrian government's bank will lose part of its assets if private banks are to be established in Syria." He called for a sort of balance in the regulations between the government and the private banks as well as to develop works of the Syrian commercial bank which is considered the only governmental bank together with its branches, in Syria.
