The first Collective wedding in Syria

On Monday the first collective wedding for young Syrian couples was made in the city of Qatana, Damascus countryside province. The wedding was organized by the Islamic charity and education society in collaboration with the ministry of social affairs and labor at the cultural center in the city.

In the presence of almost 350 persons, ten couples of the city celebrated their wedding after the society paid the expenses of the wedding and offered each couple 50,000 Syrian pounds besides the costs of the wedding and gifts given by the people of the area. The Syrian minister of Labor Barea Qudsi attended the celebrations.

The idea of this collective wedding comes, according to lawyer Mahmoud al-Ghalayeini, who is a member of the society, as a result of the difficult economic conditions the youths who want to get married suffer.

He added that contacts were made with traders and businessmen in Damascus and Damascus countryside who gave material aids to facilitate these marriages.

Worthy mentioning that number of young people in Syria is almost 4 million of both sexes, representing 28% of the total number of the Syrian population estimated at 17 million inhabitants. The Syrian minister al- Qudsi announced during the wedding that another collective wedding will be held in Damascus on February 14, 2001 and will include 50 couples.
