Iraq condemns statements made by Saudi foreign minister at GCC meeting
Iraq-Saudi Arabia, Politics, 9/5/2000
Iraq has strongly denounced statements made by the Saudi foreign minister prince Saud al-Faisal at the inauguration of the meeting of the foreign ministers of the Gulf Cooperation Council GCC, noting that these statements " reveal stances of the weak."
The Iraqi dailies published on Monday quoted the Iraqi minister of culture and information and foreign ministry secretary Humam Abdul Haleq as saying we make Iraq's political position and we do not wait it from any of such as the foreign minister of the Saudi regime."
In his speech on Friday at the ministerial meeting of the GCC member states, prince Saud al-Faisal called on Iraq to correct its reading of the international position and to precisely commit to international legitimacy resolutions.
Iraq, on the other hand, accused each of Saudi Arabia and Kuwait of preparing the statement released by the foreign ministers of the Gulf Cooperation Council which it ( Iraq) said is full of lies and misleads besides the attempts of distorting facts.
An official spokesman for the Iraqi ministry of culture and the information said that what this statement included of lies implies continued attempts of the Saudi and Kuwaiti regimes in their attitude against Iraq and also unmask their persistence to kill more Iraqi children, men and women and to destroy their houses and properties.
The spokesman added that what have been published by the GCC of statements along the past ten years and at present all aim at undermining Iraq's position, noting this will not affect Arab masses backing and political forces support to Iraq.
