Iraq rejects Iranian accusations
Iraq-Iran, Politics, 9/5/2000

Baghdad has rejected the accusations addressed by former Iranian President Hashami Rafsanjani to Iraq in trying to destabilize Iran, and for its part accused Iran of backing the " groups of destruction and rebellions " inside Iraq.

The Iraqi dailies published on Monday quoted an official spokesman for the Iraqi foreign ministry as saying that Iraq refuses categorically these false Iranian accusations which lack any proof, stressing that carrying out acts by any Iranian side against its country's authority is an Iranian matter to which Iraq has no connection.

He added that for unwavering considerations in its foreign policy Iraq refuses the principles of interference in the internal affairs of other countries especially of the neighborly states.

The Iraqi spokesman also regretted this " baseless by Rafsanjani over acts and activities carried out by the Iranian opposition while Iran gives all forms of media and political coverage and financial aids for the " destruction and rebellion groups inside Iraq and take openly from Iran a base for their activities and operation."

The Iraqi spokesman also called on Tehran to deal with its internal issues, noting " it would be much better for them should they spent their time and efforts to settle these problems according to the free will of their peoples instead of mixing the issues and perpetuating the state of tension in the region in the service of imperialism and Zionism."

On Friday, the former Iran President talked for the first time in open about the violent confrontations took place last week in Khurram Abad, where he accused Iraq of seeking to stabilizing the Iranian regime through local and terrorist elements.
