US report on Syria
Syria, Politics, 9/5/2000
The London based al-Wasat magazine has stated that a report released by experts of the foreign affairs committee at the US Congress recommended the US to establish better relations with Syria in order to strengthen chances of achieving the US objectives in the region.
The report expressed the confidence of the foreign affairs committee in President Bashar al-Assad's understanding to the Israeli requests concerning security, the water and bilateral relations if Israel returns back the Golan to the Syrian sovereignty.
The report considered that the Syrian military presence in Lebanon is a matter of concern to Syria and Lebanon and the two states can make their own assessment on it, according to the rules of Taif accord.
The report found out that Syria is a considerable weight and can take part in the special security arrangements in the Gulf region.
The report said that Syria no more raises concern over drug trafficking, besides it is also no more considered among the states interested in backing terrorism, yet it modernizes its armed forces in collaboration with Russia and South Africa.
The report also remarked that Syria is facing accusations concerning human rights including oppressive detention, and bad imprisonment condition, adding that the same accusations are addressed to Israel.
The report, on the other hand, added that Syria backs the freedom of religion and the rights of women and did not place obstacles before the Syrian Jews who decided to leave the country, noting that there are still 400 Jews who are living in Syria in relatively prosperous conditions.
The report added that the Syrian support is necessary in the context of searching for a settlement between the Arabs and Israel and a durable solution is not expected without the participation of Syria. The report also said that the coming trend of the Syrian-American relations will have strong effect on the chances of regional security and the establishment of durable peace in the Middle East.
