Egypt, keen on reaching just balanced solution
Egypt-Palestine, Politics, 9/4/2000
Egypt's President Mubarak returned home yesterday after a three-day successful visit to Paris during which he met with President Jacques Chirac and Prime Minister Lionel Jospin.
Mubarak's visit to Paris focused on the Middle East peace process in general and the issue of Jerusalem in particular; regional, international and bilateral relations were also discussed.
Reacting to the two-days talks in Paris, well informed sources were unanimous on the success of the President in maintaining identity of the Egyptian and French attitudes on the guidelines for final solution on the Palestinian track, and in shoring up Egyptian efforts to eliminate obstacles which hinder the clinching of a framework agreement between Palestinians and Israel.
There was also a unanimity that this important visit would usher in the approach of the Palestinian state declaration while the US Administration is exerting efforts for narrowing the gap between the Palestinian and Israeli sides.
Moreover, France who is the current chairman of European union could play an influential role in the peace process. Paris also has identical views with Cairo on the necessity of applying international legitimacy resolutions in order to achieve a just peace that maintains interests of all parties in the Middle East.
In the light of the successful talks of President Mubarak with the French leadership, it was clear that there was similarity in the Egyptian and French attitudes towards the current developments of the peace process.
The French side has expressed its understanding of President Mubarak viewpoints on the reality of attitudes by the parties concerned towards the issue of Jerusalem.
The French side was assured about the sincere intentions of the Palestinian side and its readiness to achieve true peace with Israel.
President Mubarak, in this regard, was keen to clarify the Egyptian and Palestinian vision of the second Camp David negotiations.
President Mubarak asserted that East Jerusalem and its Holy sanctities including AL Aqsa Mosque should be put under Palestinian sovereignty.
The President also expressed his rejection to divide East Jerusalem into four parts; an attempt that separates between political and religious sovereignty over the Holy City.
President Mubarak exchanged views with the French leadership on ideas for solving the problem of Jerusalem and the remaining final stage issues.
Egypt made it clear to the French side that if it transpired that reaching a detailed agreement was something impossible, there was no objection to the conclusion of a framework agreement which should contain principles and rules which govern the final agreement as a whole.
The Egyptian side was also keen to underline the importance of reactivating Syrian track to be parallel to the Palestinian track.
In this context, France will undertake intensive political activity based on the positive results achieved by the President's visit to Paris.
