Call for support of Italian pilot for breaking sanctions on Iraq
Jordan-Iraq, Politics, 9/4/2000
Iraqi pilots on Sunday called for an Arab move in order to foil the Jordanian verdict released recently against the Italian pilot who had made an air flight to Iraq, violating the air embargo imposed on this country.
In a statements released on Sunday, the Jordanian bar- association said the decision released by the Jordanian judicial authority is of a political nature which is in contradiction with the declared policy announced by the Jordanian government in backing lifting the embargo imposed on Iraq.
The statement added that what is intended by the Jordanian sentence against the Italian pilot is to create a state leading to foiling solidarity visits with the Iraqi people which are planned to be carried out by delegations representing Arab and international people 's, vocational, trade unions and organizations's forces to Iraq. The statement added these delegations include the secretary general of the Arab- bar association and the representatives of the Arab bar associations in a private plan to break the siege.
However, a Jordanian court has sentenced in absentia for three years, the Italian pilot Nicola Treivani for violating the Jordanian airspace in a flight he made in his plane in April to Iraq, defying the UN embargo imposed on Baghdad. The Jordanian court also decided to fine the pilot of 10,000 Jordanian dinars.
