Syrian expert and the increase of wages and salaries
Syria, Economics, 8/31/2000

The BBC said on Tuesday that since several years the employees and workers at the public, private and joint sectors in Syria had an increase in their salaries that reached 25 % as from this month, September.

The Syrian economy expert Munir Hamash said in an interview with the BBC on Tuesday that this increase in the salary came at the lowest levels and it was expected to be much more. " But any way it came after a long waiting."

He added the current inflation rate in Syria is very low and this is due to the fact that since years inflation has been alleviated to very low levels besides the state of recession in the markets.

He added that there are now numerous foodstuffs in the markets but the purchasing power of citizens is weak and increased economic activity is expected after the said salary increase.

The Syrian economist considered the current increase in salaries and wages in Syria as a step that should be followed by steps in administrative reforms, corruption fighting and wasting public assets.

He added that through taking such measures it will be possible to revitalize the economic decision, increasing investment and then increasing wages and salaries in the future.
