Arab League and Iraq
Iraq-Egypt, Politics, 8/31/2000

The secretary general of the Arab League (AL) Ismat Abdul Miguid has asserted the importance of an Arab move at the meantime in order to break the state of stalemate in the Iraqi issue, in implementation of the AL council meeting held in March 1999 and the agenda of the consultation meeting of the Arab foreign ministers held in January of the same year.

In a report he prepared to submit to the meeting of the Arab foreign ministers due to be held on Sunday in Cairo on lifting the sufferings from the Iraqi people, the AL chief stressed his continued participation in the efforts exerted to lift the sufferings from the Iraqi people and end the drastic conditions in Iraq which has been perpetuated since 10 years.

In his report, the AL chief explained that he had felt during his visit to Kuwait in April a Kuwaiti openness upon discussing various issues pertaining to the consequences of the second Gulf crisis ( the Iraqi invasion of Kuwait). He added that he had discussed with Qatar's foreign minister Sheikh Hamad Bin Jasem in May several proposals made by Qatar aiming at maintaining a united Arab stand to lift the sufferings from the Iraqi people.

The AL chief also explained in his report that he had discussed with the US State Department the question of lifting the sufferings from the Iraqi people. He also said that the AL, to this effect, received a report from the Saudi permanent delegation at the AL on the services offered to the Iraqi refugees.

However, Arab diplomatic sources in Cairo said that this report is of a special importance because it comes at a time of increased Iraqi accusation against the AL of not moving to condemn and halt what Iraq has been exposed of US and British military strikes.
