Fatah calls palestinians of al-Quds to give up israeli citizenship
Palestine-Israel, Politics, 8/30/2000
Fatah, the major faction of the Palestine Liberation Organization (PLO), on Tuesday called the Palestinian inhabitants of eastern Al-Quds (Jerusalem) to renounce Israeli citizenship.
The call was made in tracts distributed in Al-Quds, at a time Israeli-Palestinian negotiations are in a deadlock because of divergences over the future of the holy city. Tel Aviv refuses to make any concession regarding the eastern part of Al-Quds that it annexed in 1967.
Faycal Al-Husseini, who is in charge of the Al-Quds dossier at the Palestinian National Authority, had described as "traitors" the Palestinians who apply for Israeli citizenship.
"He who applies for an Israeli passport is a traitor and will not be member of the Palestinian society," Al-Husseini said.
The Al-Quds Mufti, Sheikh Ikrima Sabri, had recently recalled a fatwa (religious opinion) categorically banning Palestinians from acquiring Israeli citizenship.
Over the 200,000 inhabitants of eastern Al-Quds only 3,300 got Israeli citizenship, according to the Israeli interior department.
