ISESCO hails moroccan king's initiative to open mosques for literacy purposes
Morocco, Religion, 8/30/2000

The Islamic Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (ISESCO) paid tribute to the initiative taken by King Mohammed VI to open access to mosques as part of the campaign waged against the illiteracy plague in Morocco.

In a communiqué made public Tuesday, ISESCO Director General, Abdulaziz Othman Altwaijri, stated that the Moroccan king's initiative would undoubtedly consolidate the mission vested with mosques as instruments for disseminating science and culture for the benefit of society. He further explained that the mosque has always been, throughout the Islamic history, a crucible of knowledge and science, and a means to develop society and bring about its renaissance.

The ISESCO Director General pointed out that by choosing mosques as a venue for implementing the Moroccan National Literacy Program, the Moroccan king has taken an initiative that tallied fully with the gist of the Special Islamic Program for Literacy and Basis Training for All, a program prepared by ISESCO and adopted by its Extraordinary General Conference, held in Jomtien, Thailand, in 1990, on the occasion of the World Conference on Education for All.

He said Morocco figured among the Member States which adhered to this literacy program, particularly that the Program has become a document that reflected the collective will of the Muslim Ummah to go ahead in the fight against illiteracy and ignorance.

Conveying his appreciation for the Moroccan king's initiative, the ISESCO chief emphasized his confidence that the initiative would surely yield its fruit and attain the noble objectives targeted by King Mohammed VI, underlining that Morocco sets an example worthy of emulation to overcome the illiteracy plague.
