Nicaragua freezes recognition of so-called Sahrawi republic
Morocco-Nicaragua, Politics, 7/21/2000

Nicaragua has decided to freeze its recognition of the so-called Sahrawi republic (SADR).

The announcement was made in Rabat Friday by Vice-President of Nicaragua, Enrique Bolannos Geyer, at the end of a meeting with Moroccan Premier, Abderrahmane Youssoufi.

The Nicaraguan Vice-President told reporters that the Nicaraguan ministry of foreign affairs released Thursday a statement saying that Nicaragua decided, in the frame of the respect of the principle of people's self-determination, to suspend its recognition of the SADR, pending the final results of the referendum in the Sahara.

The United Nations is trying to hold a referendum in the Sahara --a Moroccan southern territory that was formerly under Spanish rule and that was retrieved by Morocco in 1975 under the Madrid accords.

The vote, which will give the people of the Sahara a choice between independence or integration with Morocco, has been repeatedly delayed because of the maneuvers of the separatist polisario which seeks to shrink the voters list.

The Nicaraguan Vice-President started Thursday evening a few-day official visit to Morocco at the invitation of Youssoufi.

The visit, that is aimed at upgrading political consultation and enhancing economic and cultural cooperation between the two countries, will be marked by the signing of an agreement on political consultation between the two countries' foreign departments.
