Yemeni foreign debts expected to increase

Yemeni financial sources stated that the amount of the foreign debt reached nearly 6.14 billion dollars at the end of 1999 which form 98% of the gross domestic production (GDP), expecting that this volume may increase greatly during the coming years.

He did not clarify the reasons behind the expected increase, saying that rescheduling of foreign debts contributed in decreasing it from 10.53 billion dollars in 1995 that formed 215,5% of the gross domestic production to 5.7 billion dollars in 1997 (87.1% of GDP).

He stated that the foreign debts service has decreased from 44.2% of the GDP in 1995 to 7.3% in 1997 only to increase again to 10.5% in 1999. He warned of the expected increase in volume of the foreign debts which might be a restriction the growth of the Yemeni economy in the future.
