Bahrain's princess seeks asylum to the US
Bahrain, Politics, 7/19/2000
The lawyer of princess Mariam al- Khaleifah, one of the daughters of the Bahraini ruling family has announced her intention to seek political asylum to the USA after the US migration department has refused to abrogate accusations addressed to this princess.
The Bahraini princess who fled to the US state of San Diego with a captain from the US Navy she fell in love with, is facing accusations of entering the USA illegally and of using forged documents.
Replying to questions put by journalists, the lawyer said that the princess is very worried of her family's revenge if she is obliged to return back to her country. The said princess married in November 1999 from Jepson Johnson in Las Vegas, just two weeks after she had arrived in the USA. The couple live on a naval base in Southern California.
It is presumed that the Bahraini princess will be able to stay in the US until her case is debated when a second hearing session in this case will be held within two months.
