Opinion poll: Americans back the rights of the Palestinians

An opinion poll issued on Tuesday by the Arab Institute in Washington said the majority of the Americans back the right of the Palestinians to establish their own independent state and the right of the refugees to return back.

The opinion poll which was held last week by al-Zoughbi International Institute said that 66% out of the 890 Americans who took part in the poll strongly back the right of the Palestinians to establish their own independent state while only 13% opposed this right for the Palestinians.

Some 22% of the participants in the poll agreed the idea of keeping occupied Jerusalem at the Israeli occupation, while 43.5% agreed the idea of dividing it or making of it a joint or shared capital for both the Israelis and the Palestinians while 14% showed their objection to the two proposals.

Concerning the question of the Palestinian refugees, 74% of the participants admitted the right of the Palestinians to return back to their homes while 9% have not agreed on that.

Some 63% approved what the US President Bill Clinton is doing in dealing with the ME peace process against 23% who did not.

Worthy mentioning the Arab- American Institute is an organization representing all Americans of Arab descent.

This opinion poll was held on July 14 through 17. However, the margin of error is estimated at 3.4% plus or Minus. This opinion poll also coincides with convening of the current Camp David tripartite meeting.
