Arab League urges Britain to reconsider financing Turkish dam
Syria-Iraq, Economics, 7/18/2000

The Arab League (AL) on Monday called on the British government to reconsider its stances on financing the Turkish Eilio Dam project on the Tigris river because this project violates international laws.

The Arab League assistant secretary general for political affairs Muhammad Zakaraya ismael, who is also in charge of the files of the Tigris and the Euphrates rivers at the Arab League headquarters, said that the AL has told the British foreign ministry that financing the building of this project is in contradiction with the bases of international law, and the convention on the non-naval uses specified by the international agreement of the states sharing the same coast.

However, if this project will be carried out, it will cause great damage to the local environment and displace thousands of the region's inhabitants. This project will also damage the Syrian and Iraqi water resources from the Tigris and cause a water shortage in Syria and Iraq.

He added that the AL hopes the British government will reconsider its stance on the issue in compliance with its tasks as a heavy weight state in the international community. He added Britain has to comply with the bases of justice that protect the rights of states sharing the international river.

The issues of the Tigris and the Euphrates rivers, and Turkey's plans to carry out dam building projects, and the effects of these projects on Syria and Iraq's rights in the waters of the two rivers are to be listed on the agenda of the AL council's 114th session to be held in September. The aim is to adopt a unified Arab stand that guarantees the rights of Syria and Iraq to the resource of the two rivers.
