Syria, Politics, 7/18/2000

The Kuwaiti daily al-Qabas quoted well-informed sources in Damascus as saying that the Saudi Crown Prince and Prime Minister Abdullah Bin Abdul Aziz will arrive in Damascus today to offer congratulations to President Bashar al-Assad and to hold a round of talks. On Wednesday, Jordan's King Abdullah Bin al-Hussein will arrive for the same purpose.

The Kuwaiti paper added that on Thursday President Bashar al-Assad will move to al-Qerdaha to take part in celebrating the 40-day of the late President Hafez al-Assad. Also will arrive in al-Qerdaha for the same purpose are the Egyptian President Hosni Mubarak, the Lebanese President Emil Lahoud, the Moroccan King Muhammad 5th and former Lebanese President Elias Hrawe.

With the 40-day death occasion the period of mourning will end in Syria and ordinary life will be resumed in Syria on all levels.
