Bashar al-Assad's new imprint on Syria
Syria, Politics, 7/17/2000
The London-based al-Hayat daily said in Sunday that the imprint of Bashar al-Assad are finding their way to quick implementation in regard to the political media address and means of expressing this attitude and the state-run establishments.
The paper added that President al-Assad has preferred to start his constitutional term without pictures and banners, rather with a new media address.
The paper added that verbal directives were given to chief editors of the audio-visual media in Syria to embark on a calm, logic and balanced media address.
In this regard the words "al-Raees al-Khaled" (i.e. immortal President) are no longer used because immortality is only to the God Almighty.
The official Syrian TV removed the mark of " the immortal President" which used to be shown on the screen and the TV also halted broadcasting music after it had discovered that this music is the anthem of one of the European states. The paper added that ordinary programs returned backed gradually with the end of the mourning period which expires on Friday.
The Syrian daily al-Thawra stopped the publication of an enlarged picture for the President in its first page, daily with one or two words.
The paper remarked that the Syrian advertisement company was asked to print official pictures to President Bashar to be distributed, in a limited way on the state-run establishment and to be hanged in the offices of high ranking state employees.
Al-Hayat also indicated to the instructions released by the prime minister on preventing the print of pictures for the new President or suspending them in the fronts of the state-run establishments without a prior consent. The paper added that local administration employees in the cities and provinces removed the pictures from the streets and buildings even pictures hanged on cars and on the fronts of shops.
A well- informed source said that these pictures cannot be removed by orders because people put them in their houses and shops to express love and loyalty, noting so as removing these pictures will be calmly made.
