Agreement on extending UNSC soon, not possible
Egypt, Politics, 7/15/2000
Egypt's Permanent Delegate to the UN Ambassador Ahmed Abul-Gheit voiced Friday his pessimism over the possibility of reaching an agreement soon on extending the UN Security Council membership.
Interviewed by Sawt Al-Arab Radio by phone from New York, Ambassador Abul-Gheit said that the UN members have not yet agreed on pending issues like the criteria on which the extension of membership should be based.
"The UN charter should also be amended to extend the Security Council's membership, a move which is regarded as very tough as it needs the approval of two thirds of the Security Council's members," he said.
"This task is very difficult in the light of the competing interests of every state," he concluded.
