ISESCO, Focal Point of the Organization of the Islamic Conference in Health and Population Fields

The general coordination meeting between the United Nations and the Organization of the Islamic Conference which ended its proceedings in Vienna on July 13, decided to designate ISESCO as a new focal point of the Organization of the Islamic Conference (OIC) in the fields of health and population, in addition to its present tasks as a focal point in the fields of education, literacy and promotion of human resources, science and technology.

The meeting praised in its final communiqué the excellent cooperation relationships between ISESCO (Rabat-based Islamic educational, scientific and cultural organization) and the agencies of the United Nations. It also expressed its deep appreciation for the results of this cooperation.

The activities performed by ISESCO in cooperation with the agencies of the United Nations and the organizations operating under its aegis reached as many as 171 activity over the last two years.

The meeting, that was attended by representatives of organizations, agencies and institutions operating under the United Nations and the OIC, commended the outstanding performance of ISESCO's Director General, Dr. Abdulaziz Othman Altwaijri, and the active role of the Islamic Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization is playing under his guidance in order to achieve the revival of the Islamic World in the fields of education, science, culture, health, environment and population.

The coordination meeting of focal points between the United Nations and the Organization of the Islamic Conference expressed its appreciation for the detailed report that ISESCO had presented about its implemented activities during 1999-2000. The meeting considered ISESCO an example of cooperation that must be established among the institutions and agencies operating under the United Nations and the Organization of the Islamic Conference.

It is noteworthy that the ISESCO has developed cooperation agreements with more than one hundred international and regional organizations designed to implement joint programs and activities for the benefit of the Member States and to promote the development of the Muslim World.
