Association of victims of toxic gas in rif to sue four European countries
Morocco, Politics, 7/12/2000

The association of victims of toxic gas, set up recently in the Moroccan northern city of Al-Hoceima, is projecting legal action against four European governments for having used prohibited toxic gases to quell the anti-colonization revolution of Mohammed Khattabi in the Rif region, reported Tuesday Moroccan daily "Bayane Al Youm."

The daily quoted the association chairman as saying the association is planning to sue the governments of Spain, France, Germany and Great Britain, on the basis of the 1925 Geneva convention that bans the use of toxic gas and views users as war-criminals.

The association chairman added that research revealed that these gases were behind the high prevalence of cancer cases among the Rif population.

The complaint will be lodged at the Hague-based International criminal court as well as at a Moroccan court where the law entitles the investigating magistrate to order the setting up of an investigation commission, the daily said.
