African ministers support Palestinian state
Regional, Politics, 7/11/2000

African Foreign Ministers on Monday reiterated the continent's solidarity with the Palestinian cause, a report by African News said.

In a draft resolution tabled before the 36th OAU Summit which opened Monday in Lome, Togo, the ministers urged African leaders, to "solemnly" support President Yasser Arafat's plan to create an independent and sovereign Palestinian state with Jerusalem as its capital.

The ministers appealed to the Israeli government to consolidate the peace process and to reassert "its strong commitment" to dialogue and negotiation.

They also invited Israel to put an end to its "policy of expansion and establishment" of new Jewish communities on occupied Palestinian territory, which is a violation of International Law.

The meeting further appealed for the deployment of a global initiative in the Middle East which will take all the necessary steps to ensure that Israel respects the framework of agreement of the Madrid Conference and the land for peace principle, as well as the strict implementation of all the agreements endorsed by the parties to the conflict.

The African ministers expressed satisfaction with the resumption of negotiations between Israel and Syria last December.

They invited all parties involved to continue the negotiations with the aim of creating the necessary conditions for lasting peace in the area.

The Ministers expressed satisfaction with the establishment in Mali of an Arabic-African Cultural Institute in co-operation with the Arab League.

Finally, they appealed to their partners from the Arab League to prepare a new program of co-operation that explores new areas of cooperation.
