Talks to hold a Maghreb Union summit in Algeria
Algeria-Morocco, Politics, 7/10/2000

The Leadership in the Arab Maghreb Union is making communications for convening a summit in Algeria in the fall that will vote on accepting Egypt as member of the union. The Union has not held a meeting in 6 years.

Despite optimism of convening the summit, there are new concerns that this will take place as Algeria and Morocco have not come to a conclusion on the Sahara issue which forms a point of contention between these two member states of the Maghreb Union.

The Algerian president said his country's support for self -determination on the Western Sahara, which provoked Morocco despite of Morocco's approval of having a referendum to be headed by United Nations.

Egypt tries to bring closer the point of views of the Maghreb countries, which had witnessed borders disputes, disputes in policies, instability and violations in the human rights areas.
