Former Sudanese president to join presidential race
Sudan, Politics, 7/8/2000

Jafer Nomairi, the former Sudanese president spoke of his intention to nominate himself for the presidency in mid October.

He said that this comes in a response to the desire of his people and the party and the political developments in the country which has created a democratic political discussion.

He said in declarations yesterday that he supports all the government's steps to achieve freedoms, justice and democracy.

On the other hand, the last three days witnessed intensive meetings in Hassan El-Torabi's newly created party, the National People's Conference, in order to find a candidate for the presidential election. Discussions resulted in choosing Mohamed El-Amin Khalifa while another group sees the necessity of having Hassan El-Torabi get into this battle to confront his opponent Omar El-Bashir, yet El-Torabi still rejects the idea.
