16 Arab states in Cairo for Montreal conference on telecommunications
Regional, Politics, 7/7/2000

Works of the preparatory meetings for the Arab group on telecommunications started at the premises of the Arab League on Monday.

These meetings which will last for several days are made in preparations for the world conference on telecommunications due to be held in Montreal by the end of next September.

Taking part in these meetings are representatives of some 16 Arab states and more than 100 participants, besides several Arab companies and regional and international sides concerned. It is organized by the regional bureau of the Arab states for the Telecommunications general federation and hosted by the general secretariat of the Arab League.

The regional director of the telecommunications international federation in Cairo Muhammad Abdul Nabi said these meetings aim at effective contributions of the Arab states in formulating the criteria and the principles that will govern the world of telecommunications in the future.

He explained that the absence of Arab participation from the international telecommunications circles would lead to the emergence of new regulations and agreements that might contradict with Arab interests, noting that taking part in such discussions from the very beginning would contribute to ensure Arab rights in telecommunications.
