US, Israeli, Palestinian meeting on Tuesday
Palestine-Israel, Politics, 7/6/2000

US President Bill Clinton said on Wednesday that he Israeli- Palestinian summit, under the patronage of the US will start next week in Camp Davis near Washington.

US officials expected this summit to start next Tuesday. In a press conference held in the White House the US President said that the Israeli prime minister Ehud Barak and the chairman of the Palestinian government Yasser Arafat will come to Camp David by the beginning of next week.

He explained that this meeting is the only way to proceed forward, noting that the aim is to reach an agreement on main issues which will put an end to half a century of conflict between the Israelis and the Palestinians.

However, announcing the meeting by Clinton has raised vast reactions in the two sides, as Barak said he will not sign any agreement that does not take into consideration security of the Israeli entity and its interest.

On Wednesday Barak held a quick visit to both London and Paris. He discussed with the British prime minister Tony Blair and with the French President Jacques Chirac the situation of negotiations with the Palestinian authority. He called on the two leaders to back the Israeli stances in these negotiations especially its rejection of the establishment of the Palestinian state.

In Gaza, Palestinian minister of planning and international cooperation Nabeel Shaath said that President Arafat will participate in the summit and that the Palestinian delegation will focus in the negotiations on the necessity of implementing the halted clauses from the transitional stage agreement, assuring that there is no retreat in declaring the Palestinian State following end of the transitional stage on the coming September the 13th.

In the first reaction inside Israel, the Israeli interior minister Natan Sharanski said yesterday evening that he will submit his resignation following the declaration of convening the summit.
