Algeria, Economics, 7/5/2000

Algerian President Abdelaziz Bouteflika said on Tuesday in comments about education and educational reform that educational institutions should place the student is "at the center of the university."

Focusing his attention on universities, the Algerian news agency reported quoted him saying that the main task is to train students, "motivated citizens with a critical mind, able to analyze and understand" in order to prepare them for "fully assuming their own responsibility within the society."

"Merit, capacities, efforts, perseverance and determination should animate the university in which education should be based on a comprehensive project of a permanent education," that is available to every citizen at any moment in their lives in order to maintain competence, the report said.
