Kuwaiti - Iranian border talks
Kuwait-Saudi Arabia, Politics, 7/5/2000

The spokesman for the foreign relations committee at the Kuwaiti parliament Abdul Mohsin Jammal said that the Kuwaiti first deputy prime minister and foreign minister Sheikh Sabah al-Ahmad al-Sabah will head for Tehran shortly to hold talks relating to sea border demarcation between the two countries.

The spokesman added after meeting with Sabah al-Ahmad that the latter "accepted an invitation to visit Tehran to discuss " sea border demarcation." He added that the new sea borders between Kuwait and Saudi Arabia which were agreed upon on Sunday will be on an area of 1.25 " marine " mile to the southern of the Kuwaiti island of Um al-Maradam and that this will help a lot in demarcating borders with Iran especially in regard to Felka island which faces the Iranian island of Kharj. He said that Saudi Arabia and Kuwait also agreed to share the reserves of oil and gas in the fields of al-Darra, Hout, al-Khfaji, on fifty, fifty base.

Sabah al-Ahmad explained that besides the talks with the Iranian officials, other talks will be held between Saudi Arabia and Kuwait after signing an agreement on demarcating the borders of the " continental rift" in the oil and gas-rich al-Darra field.

On Monday, the Saudi foreign minister said " border demarcation issue with Iran will be made with the same peaceful and fraternal ways we had already settled previously pending matters."
