Arab League chief confers with former UN official

The Secretary General of the Arab League AL Ismat Abdul Miguid on Tuesday in Cairo received the former assistant secretary general of the UN Dennis Halliday, who was also former UN coordinator for humanitarian issues in Iraq who resigned in protest of continued sufferings of the Iraqi people.
In a statement following the meeting, Abdul Miguid said he reviewed with the former UN coordinator the Arab and international efforts exerted to lift the sufferings of the Iraqi people and the need of ending this crisis. He stressed that the AL will continue its efforts to find out an outlet for this crisis and a formula for cooperation between Iraq and the UN that can ensure lifting the sufferings of the Iraqi people.
For his part Dennis Halliday expressed his optimism to finding out a solution to the situation in Iraq. He stressed that the sanctions will not continue on the Iraqi people.
He added he conveyed to the Arab and world figures he met with an image of the bad conditions in Iraq, adding an Arab move is expected, especially from Egypt to settle this crisis.
