Kuwaiti daily expects the convening of an Arab summit
Kuwait-Palestine, Politics, 7/5/2000

The Kuwaiti daily al-Qabas quoted well-informed sources in Cairo as saying that an Arab summit that is expected to be held before October will concentrate its efforts on one issue which is the peace process between the Palestinians and the Israelis, noting that the new Syrian President Lt. Gen. Bashar al-Assad is taking part in this summit.

The sources added that what is of concern to the Syrian track in this summit is that the summit itself is a backing to the new leadership, through having this new leadership involved in a regional forum at the level of the Arab summit. A matter which will be in itself a genuine push forward to this track.

The sources said that the Egyptian President Hosni Mubarak and the Saudi Crown Prince Abdullah had agreed during their recent summit to convene this meeting in order to introduce Bashar al-Assad to the Arabs and the World as a member at the Arab summit group. The sources ruled out the participation of the Iraqi President in this summit.
