Israel renews rejection of Palestinian state
Palestine-Israel, Politics, 7/3/2000
The legal advisor for the Israeli government Eliakim Robinshtine has renewed the rejections of the Israeli government to recognize UN Security Council resolutions 242 and implementing it on the Palestinian territories in the west Bank and Gaza strip.
In an interview with the Israeli radio on Sunday, Robinshtine said that he made this rejection at the approval of the Prime Minister Ehud Barak, after officials at the Palestinian government made statements on the need of implementing UN resolution 242 concerning the negotiation track with the Palestinians the same as for other negotiation tracks with Egypt and Jordan.
He claimed that there has never been international borders between Israel and the west bank and Gaza strip areas, noting there is only what is called the green line which was drawn in 1949 and there are also the lines of 1067. He stressed that UN resolutions 242 speaks about the need of carrying out what he described negotiations aiming at reaching an agreement about the borders.
Meantime, Israel's minister of justice Yusi Belin has admitted that Oslo agreements stated that the final status agreements with the Palestinians should be based on UN security council resolutions 242 and 338.
In a statement quoted by the Israeli radio on Sunday, Belin indicated that this is an international commitment which cannot be abrogated by an Israel, noting that it is a grave mistake by the side of Israel to backtrack what it had committed itself to and signed, including the implementation of UN resolution 242.
By these statements, Belin was commenting on the judicial view made by the legal advisor of the Israeli government Eliakim Robinshtine on that UN resolution 242 is not obligatory on Israel in regard to borders with the Palestinian authority territories.
