Morocco, Economics, 7/1/2000
Morocco's ports recorded in 1999 a record traffic of 52.9 million tons, an increase by 9.7% compared to 1998, and a turnover of $ 197.7 million.
The Moroccan ports authority "ODEP" said import traffic rose by 12.7% between 1998 and 1999, from 25.5 million tons to 28.8 million tons. Export traffic was also on the rise from 22.7 million tons to 24.1 million tons (6.3%).
The Casablanca port is the largest port in Morocco with 19.9 million tons of traffic (37.6% of the overall volume), followed by that of Mohammedia (40km north of Casablanca) (9.6 mln tons).
Financial results reveal a good performance of the turnover ($197.7 mln), value-added ($135.5 mln) and net result ($23.1 mln), which enabled ODEP consolidate its financial balances and improve its self-financing capacity.
