75.9% of Moroccan seas declared fit for bathing
Morocco, Environment, 7/1/2000

A percentage of 75.9 % of Moroccan seas were declared fit for bathing in the 1999-2000 year against 74.1% last year, the equipment ministry announced in a press conference.

The sea-surveillance program, started in 1993, is meant to monitor the microbiological and chemical features of water and sand in comparison to international standards. The report says 51.8% of sea water is of good quality, 25.6% is of average quality, 16.3% are provisionally polluted and 6.3% are of poor quality.

The equipment ministry suggests several measures to improve the situation of Moroccan seas, mainly liquid and solid waste-treatment measures, promoting public awareness and equipping beaches with hygiene facilities. More environment-protection laws, controlling ports pollution, rehabilitation of beaches threatened with erosion, informing the public of beaches that are unfit for bathing and carrying on the water analysis programs were other recommendations made by the department.
