Regional, Politics, 6/29/2000

The UN decision to earmark 0.7 of the GDP of rich countries to projects of promotion of women's conditions in South countries is a positive result likely to regain confidence in North-South partnership, said Moroccan secretary of State in charge of handicapped persons, Nezha Chekrouni.

Nezha Chekrouni, who led the Moroccan delegation to the UN general assembly extraordinary session on Women held in New York June 5-9, said that the projects will be financed by the UN and that the Ngos and the governmental bodies operating in the social field will have to submit their draft projects to the UN.

Regarding the concept of gender equality, the Moroccan official said that the quota rule is an essential step to allow women's participation in decision-making.
