Moroccan elected unanimously secretary general of OIC
Regional, Politics, 6/29/2000

The Organization of Islamic Conference "OIC" on Thursday unanimously elected Morocco's candidate, Abdelouahed Belqziz, as its secretary general.

Foreign ministers or their representatives of the OIC 56 member countries taking part this June 27-30 in the 27th session of the foreign ministers council have elected Belkziz to replace another Moroccan, Azeddine Laraki, whose four-year term ends in December.

Belkziz will be taking over his job in Jeddah starting next January. Morocco, Bangladesh and Turkey were the three candidates vying for the top OIC post.

Belkziz, 60, served as information minister and foreign minister before being appointed rector of the Kenitra university. He also acted as Morocco's ambassador to several countries, mainly in Baghdad in the 80's.
