Damascus: Court lifts immunity off three parliament members

Well-informed sources in Damascus said that the economic security court asked the Syrian ministry of justice to send a message asking for lifting immunity from three members of the Syrian parliament in preparations for trying them on charges relating to corruption.
The sources said that the corruption fighting campaign which started before the death of the late President Hafez al-Assad has not stopped during the past days and that the Syrian judiciary " follows up studying all files calmly to issues its reading verdict over them."
Reports said the court asked the People's Assembly, through the ministry of justice to lift immunity from the chairman of the General Federation of Peasants Mustafa al-Ayed, and the two members of the Union's Executive Bureau Muhammad Meyhoub and Rafik Darwish at corruption charges. The charges also target tens of employees in the general federation of peasants. Among the charges are stealing public funds, smuggling sums abroad, damaging the national economy and bribes.
The sources added on the file of corruption in Syria, that the minister of finance released his decision no.1737 of " reserving transferred and non-transferred assets of the former director of the Arab medical company ( Thameco) to pay back a sum of 12.250 million Syrian pounds with accumulated interests, together with two other persons who are heads of the same companies branches in both the provinces in Tartous and Sweida.
This measure was taken after the general commission for audition and inspection opened the file of this company whose sales reduced this year (2000) at a cost of 130 Syrian pound ( almost US$ 3 million).
