Butaflika today in Tunisia

Well-informed Algerian sources close to the Algerian Presidency said President Abdul Aziz Butaflika will visit Tunisia today, at the official invitation of the Tunisian president Zein al-Abidin Bin Ali.

It was reported that talks between the two presidents will deal with joint security and trade.

Tunisian exports to Algeria went down by almost two-thirds between 1996 and 1998, from 93.5 million Tunisian dinars (1 USD = 1.12 Dinar) in 1996 to 30.7 million dinars in 1998.

Imports, valued at 57 million dinars in 1998, also dropped to 51 million dollars compared to $ 110 million dollars in 1996.

In 1999, Tunisian exports reached 50 million dinars and imports 63 million dinars.

The figures of the first four months of 2000 seem to confirm improvement as noted in 28.8 million dinars worth of Tunisian exports against 35.8 million dinars for imports.

On the other hand, an official at the Algerian presidency denied news that President Butaflika will shortly make a government reshuffle. The official denial was made as the Prime Minister Ahmad Bin Beitour was holding his next official meeting with the chief editors of the state and independent papers.

The media director at the cabinet al-Sayed Bohoush said that the meeting falls in the course of ordinary meetings. Bin Beitour's meeting with the press came after several papers, including the London based al-Hayat daily disclosing of facts on a strong criticism addressed by the President to the government in the recent meeting for the cabinet last Thursday.
