Syrian parliament approves Bashar al-Assad for president

Lt. Gen. Bashar al-Assad on Tuesday received the Speaker of the people's Assembly Abdul Qader Qaddoura.

The PA speaker briefed Lt. Gen. Bashar on the PA discussions of the Baath Arab Socialist party regional leadership proposal of nominating al-Assad for the Presidency and the PA special committee's report to this effect.

The PA speaker also handed Lt. Gen. The decision adopted by the PA unanimously of the Baath party leadership proposal and the PA committee's report. Qaddoura also told Bashar al-Assad of the PA's chairmanship's decision of fixing next Monday July 10th. A date for the popular referendum.

Lt. Gen. al-Assad thanked the PA members for their confidence noting that he will be in the service of the people and the nation in any post chosen to him by the people.

Earlier in the day the Syrian PA unanimously approved the decisions of the Party's RL on the nomination of Dr. Bashar for Presidency.

According to article 84 of the Syrian constitution, the PA speaker Abdul Qader Qaddoura set Monday July 10th, 2000 for the popular referendum.
