Morocco, Politics, 6/27/2000
Moroccan prime minister, Abderrahmane Youssoufi surveyed before the 24th session of the UN general assembly extraordinary session Morocco's social policy, underlining how the budget earmarked to social sectors went up from 38% of the state general budget in 1995 to 47% for the current finance bill.
He stressed that Morocco, which made social commitments in the Copenhagen summit, has been using these additional funds to enlarge poorest populations' access to basic social services, curb unemployment, narrow social gaps, reform the social welfare system and enlarge social protection mechanisms.
He went on that specific programs were developed and appropriate financial institutions and funds were created to reduce poverty, in keeping with the government commitment to give utmost priority to democracy and the rule of law consolidation, human rights promotion and human dignity protection.
The premier added that in its social promotion efforts, the government is working on an allowance system for unemployed persons and on special measures for the elderly, disabled persons and homeless children.
