Syria, Politics, 6/27/2000
The Syrian People's Assembly PA on Monday at 6.p.m. held a session chaired by its speaker Abdul Qader Qaddoura. It was attended by the Prime Minister Muhammad Mustafa Miro, the Premier's two deputies and the Cabinet ministers.
The PA deputy speaker Abdullah Moselli read the report prepared by a PA special committee on the Baath party regional leadership's RL message which included the proposal to nominate Lt. Gen. Dr. Bashar al-Assad as new President for Syria.
The report said that the special committee debated the RL message no 6994 of June 14th and unanimously approved by PA members on Sunday session chaired by the committee chief Abdullah Moselli.
Several PA members delivered speeches in which they expressed great appreciation for the nomination proposal which is an expression of an overwhelming people's backing to Bashar al-Assad who represents the rich national legacy of the late leader and the nation's hopes for maintaining the march of steadfastness and comprehensive socio-economic development and progress for protecting the outstanding achievements materialized " under the historic leadership of the late President al-Assad and for strengthening his noble values and sublime national principles.
The report said the PA committee debated political, national and moralistic qualifications of Bashar al-Assad who enjoys a number of outstanding traits including the fact that he was brought up by the unique leader, governed and guided by the leader's wise knowledge and morals, fully committed to the causes of the home and the people and strongly adhered to the national objectives of the nation, is confidently able to continue the march of his father and that he is a faithful soldier to the noble values of the late leader and to the national ideology of the party.
The committee said the RL proposal is compatible with articles 83 and 84 and 85 of the state's constitution and fully corresponds with articles 177 and 178 of the PA's internal system.
The committee is of the strong opinion that its full approval of the nomination proposal is a true interpretation of the Syrian's will and aspirations for sticking to the national drive run by the late great leader, for restoring legitimate Arab rights, for liberating the occupied lands and for achieving the nation's objectives of unity, liberty and socialism.
PA members expressed total support for the regional leadership of the Baath party's proposal on nominating Bashar al-Assad for presidency as well as for the PA committee's decision of approving the proposal.
The PA speakers asserted that since the demise of the nation's leader the Syrian people announced their sincere loyalty and backing to the promising hope represented by Bashar al-Assad.
The speakers expressed total confidence that Bashar al-Assad will be the custodian of " our dear country's future. With his leading and scientific qualifications and far sightedness, Dr. Bashar will be the best one who will lead the march of our people towards restoring completely the usurped rights and achieving a just and comprehensive peace."
The PA will resume debating the committee's nomination report today (Tuesday) at 11 p.m.
